Wisconsin Breast Cancer Coalition

Education

WBCC believes that well educated advocates are effective advocates. Our EDUCATION efforts include:

  • WBCC has hosted several educational forums open to the public on topics such as “Breast Cancer and Links to the Environment”, “The Future of Breast Cancer Research and Treatment”, and “Understanding Cancer Clinical Trials”. We are particularly proud to have hosted a forum with representatives of several breast cancer organizations in the Southeast Wisconsin area that brought each organization’s mission to the community.
  • In April 2004 WBCC celebrated its 10th Anniversary by hosting Dr. Ernie Bodai, a breast cancer surgeon and prostate cancer survivor to speak on his successful effort to create the Breast Cancer Research Stamp. This stamp has raised over $55 million dollars toward quality breast cancer research. WBCC applauds his achievements and views Dr. Bodai’s example in advocacy. His is a model to embrace and motivates each of us to make a difference.
  • Over 8000 copies of “The Collective Voice”, our quarterly newsletter, are distributed throughout the state of Wisconsin. This vital education and outreach tool brings information on advocacy efforts, research topics, and events hosted by WBCC and other cancer organizations to readers across the state.
  • We have produced an award winning booklet, “You’ve Just Been Diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Is a Clinical Trial Right for You?”, which is distributed statewide via hospitals, clinics, and oncology centers so that women have an explanation of this treatment option soon after diagnosis.
  • WBCC hosts an annual meeting, inviting the public to hear a key note speak on an issue important to breast cancer advocates, such as environmental risks, new diagnostic methods, new research and more.
  • In June of 2007 we will host our first large scale advocacy training event aimed at educating participants on the importance of communicating with their legislative representatives, giving them the tools to do so, and encouraging them to Stand Up and Speak Out about breast cancer issues in an knowledgeable and effective way.
