January 2013
For many of us, the turning of our calendars to January provokes not only moments of reflection on the year past, but also feelings of profound hope and enthusiasm for the blank slate a new year presents us. I’m not sure why a calendar should be the impetus for this annual burst of optimism – we should have it year round, right? Yet, the physical “turning of the page” - (yes, some of us still rely on paper calendars)- triggers a hopefulness for me that’s often hard to recapture when I’m in the thick of the year; when deadlines are always looming and focus is on minutiae.
In this brief space that is January, it’s nice to have a wide open view of the year. To see the big picture and not the pixels. And with that January optimism, it seems that everything is attainable!
My wish list for the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Coalition is always ambitious – often more so than our resources will allow. We will strive to stay as involved in the movement to end breast cancer in as many ways as we’re able. We’re grateful to be part of a number of collaborative efforts to ensure access to screening and treatment and to control the burden of cancer by acknowledging that the best way to end it is to prevent it. We are dedicated to being a resource for what is new and promising in breast cancer research, and for sharing that information with the public.
We are enormously grateful for the support of donors – individual and corporate – over the past year. Our volunteers have made contributions both small and large, and their commitment to our cause is inspiring, with many giving up days away from their jobs and families to learn more about the science of breast cancer and to share that knowledge with others.
The Wisconsin Breast Cancer Coalition thanks you if you’ve stopped by this website, checked in on our upcoming events, or participated in our calls for action. If you would like to do more, please consider sharing your talents with us. There are a number of opportunities for you to participate, to learn and to truly make a difference.
With the utmost optimism, I welcome 2013, and resolve to try to always keep the big picture in mind throughout the year – that our goal is to end breast cancer. What can we all do to help achieve that goal?
Thank you for your past support and I wish you a happy and healthy New Year!
